Liverpool need someone to fix a massive problem and that player appears to be available. Do it, Richard Hughes.

There’s a real full-back problem at Liverpool. That problem actually arrived in 2025 with Trent Alexander-Arnold leaving the club but to say it’s been exacerbated since then is an understatement.

Andy Robertson has now left as well, while Conor Bradley has a serious injury that rules him out long-term. Jeremie Frimpong, signed as Alexander-Arnold’s replacement, looks incapable of playing there reliably – or at least, Arne Slot gave up on the idea.

As things stand, Kostas Tsimikas will return to fill the Robertson void. He’s another who hasn’t been trusted in the past and even AS Roma were reluctant to play him.

Milos Kerkez stands as the sole reliable full-back, then. It’s not really enough.

What Liverpool really need, then, is someone who can operate on both flanks. Bradley will be back, after all, and Frimpong will get minutes at right-back – a player who battles with Kerkez while potentially being first-choice on the right is ideal.

And that player seems to be around. The BBC report that Neco Williams is potentially available, with Manchester United and Newcastle United both looking into a deal for him.

Williams is, of course, a former Liverpool youth product and one that the Reds weren’t thrilled to lose. His lack of minutes behind Alexander-Arnold were a problem at the time, especially with Robertson taking up minutes on the left.

Now both are gone and there’s a fight for a starting spot that’s there to be won. Williams could return to the club as a full-back who can operate on both sides, knows the club perfectly, and undoubtedly has the quality to shine.

It’s a transfer we’d absolutely love to see happen this summer. Letting United get him – or even Newcastle – would be hard to take, given his quality and Richard Hughes should push on to make this happen.

It would be a surprise one, of course. We weren’t aware Williams would even be available, while there are zero links with a move back to Anfield.

But none of that matters. Liverpool need a player like him and they simply will not find a better option this summer.
