Disney+'s 12-Episode Sci-Fi Masterpiece Officially Sets Up The Sci-Fi Event Of The Decade

· · 4 min read

One of the absolute best science fiction shows on Disney+ did a lot of legwork to set up the cinematic sci-fi event of the decade. Disney+ boasts one of the most impressive catalogs of science fiction shows and movies of any streaming service. Between the various Star Wars shows, installments in franchises like Alien and Predator, and the many MCU TV shows, Disney+ has some big names on its platform.

Disney+’s original sci-fi shows have even made the jump from streaming to theaters in recent years. Most notably, The Mandalorian got its first feature-length film in The Mandalorian and Grogu. Now, the streamer has another show that is going to be massively important to an upcoming sci-fi movie. Unlike The Mandalorian and Grogu, which bombed financially, this upcoming film is set to be the biggest sci-fi event of the entire decade.

That movie is, of course, Avengers: Doomsday, the next major crossover blockbuster from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since it’s such a huge crossover, it may not seem like any of Disney+’s shows act as direct lead-ins to Doomsday. One show, however, laid the groundwork for it: Loki. The two-season time travel show is actually required viewing going into Doomsday, the only MCU show that absolutely must be seen first.

Loki Is The Only MCU Show You Need To Watch Before Avengers: Doomsday

As previously mentioned, Loki is the only MCU show viewers need to watch before going into Avengers: Doomsday. Though there have been over a dozen live-action MCU shows over the years, shows like Secret Invasion and Wonder Man won’t be terribly important to Doomsday. Even shows that do have important context, such as shows that introduced new characters like Hawkeye and Ironheart, can’t hold a candle to Loki.

Loki is absolutely critical to Doomsday not because of its lore or new characters, but because of the context it provides. While it is true that the show was originally working to establish Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror, it also does a tremendous amount of legwork to establish and explain the multiverse. The multiverse is going to be a central part of Doctor Doom’s plans in Doomsday and Secret Wars, so understanding how it works in the MCU is crucial.

Loki, by following Loki as he encounters the TVA, is basically a crash-course to both time travel and the multiverse in the MCU. The show dives into branching timelines, variants of characters from other universes, incursions, and Loki’s ultimate fate of becoming the God of Stories holding the entire MCU’s timeline together. All of the high-concept sci-fi elements that Doomsday will be built upon but won’t have time to explain are explored in-depth in Loki.

It’s also worth noting that very few MCU movies or shows have done anything to set Doctor Doom up, aside from a post-credits scene in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. So, while Loki doesn’t introduce Doom, it does lay the groundwork for how he becomes such a major threat to the MCU so quickly. It should also provide the framework for Doomsday to explain Doom’s motivations, his backstory from another universe, and what he ultimately wants to achieve. In short, Loki is basically a prequel to Doomsday.

Loki Is Such A Good Show, You Don’t Need Doomsday As An Excuse To Watch It

Yet another reason Loki is required viewing before Doomsday is simply the fact that it’s the single best show in the franchise and arguably the best thing the MCU has produced in years. Even if you’re not into superheroes or the MCU, Loki is so good that it’s still a must-watch. It has all the detailed and well-developed science fiction elements listed above which should be perfect for sci-fi fans, but it also has so much more.

Loki is, at its core, a beautifully touching and extremely intimate story. It touches on everything from the idea of one forging their own destiny to identity and redemption. Tom Hiddleston gives one of the greatest performances of his life, and certainly one of his best as the Norse trickster god. It’s endlessly rewarding for longtime fans of the MCU, but it’s also so sharply written than anyone can essentially jump in blind, as long as they understand Loki is a villain.

It’s hard to find a single aspect about Loki that isn’t praiseworthy. Put simply, it’s a masterpiece, and one of the very best sci-fi shows of the 2020s so far. Loki is to the MCU what Andor is to Star Wars: a complete redefining of what their respective franchises are capable of. Even if you have no intention of watching Avengers: Doomsday, please consider watching Loki.
