Uncertainty is the biggest nemesis of NFL front offices. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are learning that the hard way. Vita Vea had already requested a trade out of their franchise. Now, it has become apparent that Baker Mayfield is also livid about how the front office is treating his contract situation.

Mayfield blasts Buccaneers after contract extension talks stall

Baker Mayfield is currently entering the last year of his $100 million deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Projections from pundits have him making at least $50 million after what he has shown in the past three years.

By now, the Buccaneers front office should be figuring out how to keep Mayfield, as he is still in his prime years. However, it looks like they are not that interested in having him as their quarterback for long. Contract negotiations have stalled, and Mayfield seems fed up about the situation. He blasted the front office and declared that his output with the Buccaneers begets a long-term deal that’s prioritized, via Nick Shook of NFL.com.

“I wanted a deal done and set the deadline and told them it was gonna be all ball after that. I did mean that, and I don’t know if they thought I was gonna take some of the offers they gave. I’m at the point in my career, understanding what I’ve brought to this franchise… Leadership-wise and play-wise. It’s been some of the best years of my career, and I think it’s only gonna trend upwards, just being comfortable and feeling that. So, disappointing in that regard to not have … to feel disrespected a little bit. That’s really the disappointing part, to feel undervalued after thinking you’ve earned it. This is not a ‘poor me’ thing,” the Buccaneers star quarterback declared.

Mayfield is justified in seeking answers from the Buccaneers front office. So far, his numbers reflect the hard work he has put into the franchise, too. Throughout his tenure with the Buccaneers, he has tallied 12,237 passing yards on a 66.3% completion percentage while also firing away 95 passing touchdowns, with the last two of those statistics being career-high numbers for a franchise.

“I think I’m a franchise quarterback. I’ve been told I’m a franchise quarterback. It’s been said publicly from ownership down here. So, to not have a deal done is very disappointing. But I said the deadline was the deadline. If you’ve waited this long to take care of your franchise quarterback, that’s too bad because it’s only going to get worse from here. I’m going to have a really good year,” Mayfield added.

Reports have surfaced about Mayfield playing out the last year of his contract with the Buccaneers. This leaves the front office with no choice or leverage at all; either they let him walk in free agency or have to give him a bigger deal if he does up his production significantly.

The situation is starting to sour for the Buccaneers front office. Mayfield wanted a deal that was at least close to $50 million, but the offer was nowhere near what was laid on the table.

The Buccaneers will already see Vita Vea leave; it sounds like Mayfield will do the same. The main difference? It does not look like they are getting anything in return.
