Miami (FL) football escaped one of its toughest tests of the 2026 college football season, but the Hurricanes should have plenty to review after surviving Florida State in a wild double-overtime Sunshine State showdown. The 43-35 victory kept Miami’s undefeated record intact. However, the Seminoles repeatedly exposed vulnerabilities that could become costly against stronger opponents. Miami quarterback Darian Mensah delivered an outstanding performance. He threw for 326 yards and three touchdowns. Meanwhile, Malachi Toney provided the decisive spark in overtime. Florida State quarterback Ashton Daniels answered with 298 passing yards and four touchdowns. He kept the Seminoles within striking distance until the final play. For Miami, the result brought relief and another victory in a rivalry that rarely disappoints. That said, did Florida State expose the defensive weaknesses that could ultimately derail the Hurricanes’ championship ambitions?
Cracks under pressure
The Hurricanes’ defensive performance deserves serious scrutiny. That’s after they allowed Florida State to dictate the game’s tempo and force two overtime periods. Giving up four touchdown passes to Daniels, including a 25-yard strike to Darion Robinson with 35 seconds remaining in regulation, exposed problems in Miami’s secondary at the worst possible moments.
Those breakdowns will concern head coach Mario Cristobal. Miami entered the rivalry with championship aspirations. Of course, teams pursuing those goals must demonstrate the ability to close out opponents when opportunities arise. The Hurricanes repeatedly struggled to generate decisive stops. They just allowed Florida State to extend drives and maintain pressure deep into the fourth quarter.

The Seminoles also found opportunities to attack downfield. They tested Miami’s coverage discipline and ability to respond to changing offensive formations. Those are areas opposing coordinators will study closely when preparing for the Hurricanes during the remainder of the season.
Miami’s defensive front must also improve its gap integrity and tackling consistency. Florida State lost leading runner Kamarion Krenn to a first-half leg injury. That created additional challenges for their offensive balance. Still, the Seminoles managed to generate enough explosive plays through the air to keep Miami uncomfortable throughout the evening.
The Hurricanes ultimately made the decisive plays in overtime. Bryce Fitzgerald’s interception sealed the victory. That finish demonstrated Miami’s ability to respond under pressure. The larger concern is whether the defense can deliver more consistent performances before another close game becomes a costly defeat.
What the thriller means
Miami’s survival has significant implications for the ACC race. An undefeated record strengthens the Hurricanes’ position in the conference title conversation. It also keeps their national championship ambitions firmly alive. The performance against Florida State, however, provides future opponents with a blueprint for challenging their defense.
Cristobal’s immediate priority should be cleaning up the secondary’s communication. He should also improve execution in high-leverage situations. Miami cannot afford to repeatedly surrender late touchdowns and expect its offense to rescue the team every time.
Of course, Mensah has demonstrated that he can carry the offense when necessary. His 328 passing yards and three touchdowns gave Miami the firepower they needed to survive Florida State’s challenge. Toney’s game-winning touchdown and crucial two-point conversion pass to Cooper Barkate further highlighted the playmakers available to the Hurricanes.
That offensive production gives Miami a strong foundation for the weeks ahead. The coaching staff must ensure the defense provides enough stability to complement it.
Florida State also deserves credit for its performance. Daniels delivered four touchdown passes. Robinson’s late scoring reception demonstrated the Seminoles’ ability to execute under enormous pressure. Despite the loss, Florida State showed that its offense can challenge one of the ACC’s leading contenders.
For the Seminoles, the immediate task is translating that competitiveness into victories. For Miami, the challenge is turning a narrow escape into a meaningful learning experience.
Real warning signs
Florida State pushed Miami to the limit. The Seminoles exposed defensive weaknesses that championship contenders must address. The Hurricanes remain undefeated, and their ability to deliver in double overtime deserves recognition. Their defensive inconsistency, however, raises legitimate questions about how they will fare against elite competition.
Cristobal has an opportunity to use this rivalry thriller as a turning point. Better coverage discipline, stronger tackling, and more reliable late-game execution would make Miami considerably more dangerous.
The Hurricanes survived the Sunshine State showdown. Their championship hopes remain intact. Whether they can turn that survival into sustained dominance will depend on how quickly they address the problems Florida State brought into the open.
