Detroit Lions rule duo out vs. New York Jets in Week 3

The Detroit Lions (1-1) ruled out offensive lineman Ben Bartch (foot) and safety Thomas Harper (ankle) from its upcoming Week 3 date against the New York Jets (1-1) on Sunday.

While Bartch started last week in the Lions‘ 41-31 loss at the Buffalo Bills, Christian Mahogany won the offseason competition at left guard and was Detroit’s Week 1 starter in its 31-30 overtime win over the New Orleans Saints. Mahogany suffered a knee injury on the Lions’ second possession of its season opener, limiting him to just 11 snaps against the Saints per Pro Football Focus.

While offensive line depth is always at a premium, the Harper loss feels more costly. Detroit’s defense ranks 31st in both passing defense (310.5 yards per game) and scoring defense (35.5 points per game) heading into Sunday.

A Detroit defense that is navigating its opening stretch minus safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph was further depleted last week. Defensive back Avonte Maddox suffered a season-ending foot injury at the Bills that will require surgery.

It isn’t all bad news on the injury front this week, though. Along with Mahogany, right tackle Blake Miller will be back in the fold against the Jets. Starting right guard Tate Ratledge was also listed as a limited participant to begin this week with an elbow injury.

Ratledge was upgraded to a full participant on Friday’s injury report.

Meanwhile, the Jets ruled out safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, tight end Mason Taylor and linebacker Kiko Mauigoa. Jets running back Kene Nwangwu is doubtful, while receiver Adonai Mitchell and EDGE Joseph Ossai were both tabbed as questionable on New York’s Friday injury report.
