Departing Beye thanks Marseille players for staying ‘united’ during tenure

Habib Beye credited his Marseille players for staying “united until the end of our adventure” after he was sacked by the Ligue 1 giants earlier this week. 

Beye, who had been dismissed by Rennes in February, joined Marseille to replace Roberto De Zerbi, who moved to Premier League strugglers Tottenham. 

The 48-year-old, who played for Marseille between 2003 and 2007, oversaw just 13 games in all competitions, winning six of those (D2 L5). 

During his stint, his team conceded 18 goals while scoring just seven times, with Marseille dropping from fourth to fifth and finishing 17 points behind Paris Saint-Germain. 

And despite securing a spot in the Europa League for next season, Beye was relieved of his duties on Tuesday, with Marseille appointing Bruno Genesio as his successor.

“It was a real privilege to be the coach of Olympique de Marseille,” Beye said in a post on social media. “I wanted to thank you, supporters, for your passion and support.

“To all the employees of the club with whom I have had the pleasure of working, as well as all my staff who have accompanied and supported me, I would like to bring them all my admiration and gratitude.

“To my players, THANK YOU because we have remained together, united and united until the end of our adventure.”

Genesio arrives in Marseille after two successful seasons with Lille, guiding them to a third-place finish in Ligue 1 in 2025-26 and a spot in the Champions League.

This will be the fourth different Ligue 1 side that Genesio has managed. He has previously taken charge of Lyon and Rennes. 

He has overseen 299 top-flight matches in France, winning 160 of those games (D60 L79) and boasting a win percentage of 53.5%. 

“I chose to join Olympique de Marseille because I was seduced by the challenge that was presented to me,” Genesio said.

“OM is a unique club, with an exceptional history, a strong identity and supporters whose passion is recognised far beyond its borders.

“I am very happy to be part of this new project. I would like to thank Frank McCourt, Stephane Richard and Gregory Lorenzi for their trust.

“I can’t wait to start working with all the club’s teams and the players in order to build a group that lives up to Olympique de Marseille’s ambitions.”

Marseille begin their 2026-27 league campaign at home to Strasbourg on August 22. They face defending champions Paris Saint-Germain in Le Classique on September 20.
