Democracy Day: Kebbi ADC urges politicians to prioritise public interest over personal gain

The Kebbi State chapter of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, has called on politicians to place the interests of the people above personal gain, saying the significance of the June 12 struggle lies in promoting good governance and public service.

The party made the call in a statement issued by its Deputy Publicity Secretary, Engr. Abubakar Atiku Musa, to commemorate Democracy Day.

According to Musa, the June 12, 1993 presidential election remains a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic history and serves as a reminder that leadership should be driven by sacrifice and commitment to the welfare of citizens rather than personal enrichment.

He said democracy should go beyond elections to include accountability, security, protection of citizens’ rights and policies that improve the living conditions of the people.

The ADC spokesperson expressed concern over the country’s security challenges, economic hardship and declining public confidence in some institutions, urging leaders to focus on addressing the needs and aspirations of ordinary Nigerians.

Musa also stressed the need to strengthen democratic institutions, uphold justice and ensure transparency and accountability in governance.

He called on political leaders to protect the rule of law, respect the independence of the judiciary and avoid using security agencies for political purposes.

The party further urged governments to prioritise the welfare and safety of citizens, manage public borrowing responsibly and ensure that public resources are used for projects that directly benefit the people.

According to the ADC, the lessons of June 12 highlights the importance of honesty, integrity and people-centred leadership in sustaining Nigeria’s democracy.
