DeMar DeRozan has built a career scoring through difficult looks. Now, as he joins Nikola Jokic in Denver, he sees a chance to get scoring opportunities that demand less work.

“Throughout my career, the amount of points I scored, majority of them was tough. So being able to play with somebody that demands so much attention but also has the IQ at such a high level that creates easy buckets, it just makes it easier on me,” DeRozan said of Jokic.

That combination stands out to DeRozan. Jokic draws attention and recognizes where the defense leaves an opening. For a scorer accustomed to creating under pressure, the prospect of simpler chances changes the equation.

DeRozan puts winning ahead of his role

The Nuggets signed the six-time All-Star to a veteran minimum deal after their first-round playoff exit. DeRozan expects to come off the bench, a role he has not held since his rookie season, but he has made his priorities clear.

“My mindset is to win,” DeRozan said during media day. “Go out there and compete. Be myself. Go out there, help this team in whatever way possible to win, compete.”
He also said he would do whatever Denver needs to help it win. That approach gives the Nuggets a veteran scorer who sounds willing to adjust to a new role.

His comments explain why playing alongside Jokic appeals to him. DeRozan brings years of experience making tough shots. Jokic’s ability to create easier chances could give DeRozan another way to contribute as Denver tries to move past its early playoff exit.
