Bengal cricketer Abishek Porel has been granted bail by a Chinsurah court after spending more than a month in custody in connection with an alleged rape and criminal intimidation case. The development was reported by ABP Ananda, while multiple reports have also confirmed the bail order.

Porel, who plays for Delhi Capitals in the IPL, was arrested on August 11 following a complaint filed by a medical student from Karnataka. She alleged that she had been in a relationship with Porel for around three-and-a-half years and that the two had planned to marry.

The complainant also alleged that they had travelled abroad together during their relationship, but claimed that Porel later denied their relationship, prompting her to approach the police.

Her complaint was filed at Mogra police station on June 23. She also referred to a dispute between the two around one-and-a-half years earlier that had resulted in police intervention, although no formal complaint was filed at that time, according to her account.

Police registered a case under Section 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Sections 311 and 318 and other provisions of the BNS, as well as Sections 66 and 72 of the Information Technology Act.

The matter subsequently reached the Calcutta High Court, which directed the police to arrest Porel. The proceedings also included allegations of criminal intimidation and other offences alongside the rape allegation. The court had further directed authorities to seize Porel’s electronic devices in connection with concerns over the possible dissemination of photographs of the complainant.

Porel was produced before the Chinsurah court after his arrest and was initially denied bail before being sent to judicial custody. He has now been granted bail after spending 36 days in jail, according to the ABP Ananda report.

Porel has previously denied the allegations against him.

Porel’s IPL and domestic career

The 23-year-old wicketkeeper-batter has been part of the Delhi Capitals setup since 2023, when he made his IPL debut. He scored 108 runs in four innings for the franchise during the 2026 season. Overall, he has played 35 games, scoring 769 runs at an average of 25.63 and a strike rate of 145.37, including four fifties.

Porel made his first-class debut for Bengal in the 2021-22 season and has since become an established figure in the domestic circuit. He has represented Bengal in 32 first-class matches and 23 List A games.
