De Roon releases first Roma interview: “I’m super happy, Gasperini gave me the opportunity of a lifetime.”
Marten de Roon introduces himself to Roma fans.
The new Giallorossi midfielder gave his first interview to the club’s official channels, discussing his feelings after arriving in the capital, his special relationship with Gian Piero Gasperini, and also revisiting his old social media posts against Roma.
He then discussed the Olimpico, the Champions League, and the role he could play in the dressing room.
“I’m super happy, it’s something really great, moving to a big club. Then I saw the training center, which is top-notch, and I really want to leave.”
“Gasperini? He brought me up; I played under him for nine years, and we achieved fantastic results. I had a very special relationship with him; I played all the time, and at one point I was his captain.”
“He brought us, but above all he brought me, to a great level, and I thank him so much for that. Even now, we spoke almost a day ago and we made a great move: he gave me this opportunity to come here, and for that, I thank him so much. And then, of course, also the club and the management, who wanted me. It’s not a given at all, and I’m truly super happy.”
“So, very clear: I’m someone who always plays on social media, I always push the limits a little. On that occasion, I think I crossed the line a little. But there’s also an explanation: I always manage my social media with two friends. It’s the only time—it seems like a lie—but it’s the only time I didn’t authorize the post, because I had so many interviews after the game. But on that occasion, I’m sorry, because I crossed the line.”
“Social media is a separate area. I want to show on the pitch that I’m someone who goes above and beyond, who gives everything for the shirt. Now I have to repay this trust with facts.”
“I saw Roma last year, they were in great form, and I even saw their first match. The stadium is something very special. Every time I’ve played here, I’ve been very impressed; it’s always packed with passionate fans. Bringing the Champions League back to the Olimpico, against very, very strong and good teams, in my opinion will create an incredible atmosphere. As Roma, we have to enjoy these evenings and hope, or at least try, to achieve great results.”
“The team is there, because I saw a great team. There are guys like Cristante, who I know and who has a lot of experience, Dybala, Mancini, who have been playing here for many years. I’m someone who wants to help, especially because I know the coach’s game very well. In the locker room there are also Donyell and Devyne, two Dutchmen. I want to do my part, but I’ve joined a team and a squad that is already very strong.”
