DC’s Upcoming Green Lantern Release Is Everything The DCU’s Next Project Should Be

· · 4 min read

DC reveals the first glimpse at Hal Jordan’s next battle, which looks like the ideal basis for the DCU’s future Green Lantern movie and show appearances. HBO’s Lanterns marks a remarkable milestone as the first live-action, non-cameo Green Lantern project since the critical and commercial stumble of 2011’s Green Lantern movie. The fifteen-year drought feels especially strange given how central the Emerald Knights are to the broader DC Universe and the superhero genre as a whole. Yet, for over a decade following Ryan Reynolds’s polarizing outing, the Lanterns were largely relegated to brief, peripheral nods.

Fortunately, this return is only the beginning, as the Green Lanterns are playing a vital role in the expanding DCU. Following the events of the HBO series’ first season, both Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart and Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner are confirmed to reunite on the big screen in James Gunn’s upcoming sequel Man of Tomorrow. With the two Lanterns joining Superman and Lex Luthor to confront Brainiac, their presence in the 2027 movie pulls them from grounded terrestrial mysteries to world-scale war. New Lantern heroes and their respective villains could be introduced soon afterward, as their lore seems to be developing faster than that of any other DCU character.

Before Man of Tomorrow adds unbridled sci-fi and fantasy to John Stewart’s DCU story, DC Comics shows how visually stunning a full-scale Green Lantern movie or show would look.

Hal Jordan’s Battle Against The Manhunters Should Inspire The DCU’s Next Green Lantern Appearance

Hal Jordan’s clash against the returning Green Lantern villain Krona and the Manhunters in Green Lantern Corps showcases the perfect scale and tone missing from the DCU’s Lanterns adaptation. In Green Lantern Corps , Hal Jordan teams up Krona, Jayna, and Tobi Y2K to dive deep into the wild Nexus of Emotions, where they meet face to face with the Manhunters. The heroes’ varied costumes and powers, the Manhunters’ colorful yet intimidating appearance, and the incredibly vibrant landscape of the Nexus of Emotions create a breathtaking visual experience that has never been adapted to live-action in a DC movie or show.

Although the HBO series Lanterns presents a bold and interesting take on the Greek Lantern mythos with its gritty crime-thriller murder mystery, the psychedelic visuals of Green Lantern Corps are something no live-action adaptation has dared to try. Now that Lanterns has introduced a new version of the Corps grounded on Earth, John Stewart’s return in James Gunn’s bombastic Man of Tomorrow and other future DCU Green Lantern appearances should draw inspiration from the comics and provide an unapologetically hard sci-fi story starring one or more Green Lanterns, especially if Nathan Fillion’s scenery-chewing Guy Gardner has a key role in the plot.

DC Has Yet To Display The Green Lantern Corps In Their Full Glory

Despite the immense popularity of the franchise, the Green Lantern Corps have yet to showcase their full cosmic majesty in live-action. On the big screen, the 2011 Green Lantern movie isolated Hal Jordan on a predictable hero’s journey that barely scratched the surface of Oa’s vast alien lore, Zack Snyder’s Justice League only featured Yalan Gur in a single flashback scene, and James Gunn’s Superman only included Guy Gardner in a supporting role. The DCU’s Lanterns narrowed its scope and focused entirely on Hal Jordan and John Stewart’s grounded mystery bound strictly to Earth.

A new Green Lantern big-screen adaptation could showcase multiple Earth Lanterns fighting side by side, complementing each other’s constructs in creative team-up maneuvers with their own unique spin on their weapons. Audiences have yet to witness the sheer thrill of large-scale, live-action space warfare where hundreds of diverse ring-slingers engage in chaotic construct-filled battles against iconic Green Lantern villains such as the Sinestro Corps, the Black Lanterns, and the Manhunters. While the DCU presents a very different perspective, there’s still room for a large-scale, colorful take on the Lanterns in the big or the small screen.
