DC Announces Dangerous New Wonder Woman Superpower

Wonder Woman is one of those superheroes who protects the innocent with a variety of powers and abilities. Like the other Amazons from Themyscira, Diana is gifted with superhuman strength, speed, durability, reflexes, and other physical enhancements, but those are further boosted for her thanks to her demigod status. Diana was further blessed by the Greek gods with unique powers like flight and being able to communicate with animals.

Combine all that with being skilled in multiple forms of hand-to-hand combat, as well as being armed with magical items like the Lasso of Truth and her bulletproof bracelets, and it’s no wonder why Wonder Woman ranks as one of the strongest DC characters. Now DC has announced that one of the most popular current depictions of Diana in the comics is getting an additional superpower. However, this one is dangerous and has the potential to endanger her.

Absolute Wonder Woman Will No Longer Feel Fear

The preview for Absolute Wonder Woman shows Diana brewing a concoction while chanting, “Reason and logic to reign supreme, courage in the face of fear, seeds of truth as guiding light,” along with words in an ancient language, as part of a spell. This is an antidote to the fear that’s overtaken the citizens of Gateway City. While Diana is confident that the antidote will work, she also points out that ridding one’s self of fear is “almost as dangerous as fear running rampant.”

Nevertheless, with Steve not wanting Diana to dose the entire city with the antidote in case there are problems, she tests it on herself first. Upon ingesting it, she proclaims she’s “never felt better” in her whole life, and that “nobody has felt better” than she does at that moment. Now free of fear, Diana is ready to combat Phobos and Deimos, the Greek gods of fear, and end their reign of terror.

While this sounds nice in practice, being fearless could become a big problem for the Absolute version of Diana. There have been plenty of stories told over the years about how someone who is incapable of feeling fear can become reckless and sloppy. So even though Diana might feel great in Absolute Wonder Woman at first, this magical potion’s effects could compromise her judgment and lead to her making some careless decisions that threaten her life. As such, hopefully Diana’s current state is temporary, as a healthy dose of fear is necessary for survival.

Regardless, this power-up comes at a momentous time in Absolute Wonder Woman‘s run. Absolute Wonder Woman is an oversized issue that, as teased in the solicitation, kicks the “Heretic” storyline “into a new gear” by introducing the Absolute version of Cheetah, one of Wonder Woman’s greatest villains. Just like in the main DC continuity, this Cheetah is Barbara Minerva, who’s been missing. Like so many things in the Absolute Universe, Barbara’s debut as this antagonistic creature is “not quite what anyone expected.”

Absolute Wonder Woman will be released Wednesday, October 28 by DC Comics.
