The 2026 college football season began with expectations that it might preview one of the strongest NFL quarterback classes in recent memory. Instead, the perceived top prospects have been all over the map.
Arch Manning and Dante Moore have slid, while Drew Mestemaker has surged and CJ Carr has held steady. No one might be having a better season than Miami’s Darian Mensah, though.
Mensah has 25 touchdowns to just one interception through eight games, completing more than 80 percent of passes and positioning himself as a Heisman Trophy front-runner.
Still, not all NFL front offices are sold on Mensah’s status as a high first-round pick.
Here’s a closer look at Mensah’s NFL Draft stock and why he isn’t ranked higher.

Darian Mensah NFL Draft projection
Pundits are divided on Mensah’s NFL Draft outlook. ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. ranks Mensah fourth among all prospects in 2027, while Sporting News’ own Vinnie Iyer doesn’t have Mensah in the first round of his most recent NFL mock draft.
CBS Sports, meanwhile, ranks Mensah 81st among all prospects, signaling how many different opinions exist about the Miami quarterback.
If half of NFL teams view him as a legitimate first-round prospect and half don’t, odds are Mensah is going to land on the higher end of that spectrum. All it takes is one team to believe in a quarterback for that quarterback to come off the board early, and Mensah’s production has been so dominant that it wouldn’t be surprising to see him land near the top of the first round.
Here are the details behind Mensah’s inconsistent draft stock.
Why isn’t Darian Mensah higher on draft boards?
As a player, Mensah’s arm strength is a potential red flag for NFL teams. His arm strength isn’t a true weakness, but it doesn’t jump off the page like it does for many premier NFL quarterback prospects who are jumping into a league that plays faster all-around.
Mensah’s ball placement has easily made up for solid but unspectacular arm strength at the college level, but NFL teams will have to evaluate whether they believe that will stand up at the next level.
The inconsistent evaluations of Mensah might also be related to Miami’s schedule this season. The Hurricanes simply haven’t faced many high-level defenses, making it tougher to evaluate his decision-making. That is set to change, of course, as Miami will face Notre Dame and should be in line for at least one big-time matchup in the College Football Playoff.
If Mensah can come close to sustaining his production against tougher competition, he might win over some skeptical evaluators.
