DaOne Owens leads Slippery Rock football offensive explosion, Stark college updates

DaOne Owens enjoyed a career day Saturday, Sept. 19 for the Slippery Rock football team.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound junior quarterback, who led the Massillon Tigers to a 2023 state title, connected on 20 of 25 passes for 307 yards with three touchdowns in a 70-10 victory over Millersville. The three scores included a 71-yarder to open the second half.

Owens has led The Rock to a 3-0 start. He has completed 50 of 68 passes for 707 yards with seven TDs and no interceptions. He stands fourth in Division II in completion percentage (73.5) and passing efficiency (194.8) and sixth in yards per pass (10.40).

As a sophomore, Owens played in all 10 games and started the last eight to lead Slippery Rock to a 6-4 record. He completed 121 of 220 passes for 1,682 yards and 14 TDs with five interceptions. He also rushed for 302 yards on 69 carries with seven TDs.

The junior finished tied for 41st in a field of 81 for the Xavier men’s golf team at Duke University’s Rod Myers Invitational, Sept. 21-22, in Durham, N.C. Smith shot 2-over for the tourney, which was shortened to 36 holes because of bad weather. He had rounds of 75 and 71 for a 146 total. The 71 was 1-under. The Musketeers finished sixth out of 13 teams with a 4-under 572.

The sophomore finished 16th out of 324 runners for the Cleveland State women’s cross country team at the All-Ohio InterCollegiate Challenge, Friday, Sept. 18 in Cedarville. Crissman had a time of 23:07.6 over the 6,000-meter course. Crissman kicked off the season by posting a personal record 18:43.5 in the 5,000 at the Mike Baumer Classic on Sept. 4 in Fairborn, finishing 16th out 120 runners.

The 5-10, 180-pound safety, a fifth-year student, made a game-high nine tackles for the New Mexico football team in a 14-6 loss at Oklahoma on Saturday, Sept. 19. Brawley had four unassisted tackles. He leads the Lobos with 14 tackles and has two pass breakups and a quarterback hit. Brawley spent three seasons at Ohio University, joining New Mexico last season and finished with 26 tackles and three interceptions a year ago.

The 5-10 sophomore outside hitter had a double-double for the 4-8 Youngstown State women’s volleyball team, which opened Horizon League play with a 3-2 loss at Robert Morris on Tuesday, Sept. 22. Graffice had a team-high 16 kills and 11 digs along with three service aces in the match. It was her fourth double-double. On the season, she has 108 kills, 90 digs and 10 service aces. Graffice was named to the Horizon All-Freshman team last season.

The 5-10, 190-pound sophomore running back scored two touchdowns to help the Mercyhurst football team defeat Glenville State 49-20 for its first victory in four games, Saturday, Sept. 19. Gamble had scoring runs of 28 and 2 yards and carried the ball 17 times for 105 yards. He leads the Lakers in rushing with 217 yards on 46 carries (4.7 average). Gamble played in eight games as a true freshman, picking up 152 yards on 31 carries.

The junior finished first out of 44 runners for the Baldwin Wallace men’s cross country team at Allegheny’s Ben Maurer Memorial Invitational, Saturday, Sept. 19. He covered the 8,000-meter course in 27:26.9 to help the Yellow Jackets easily win the team title. Dorris opened the season by winning the 50-runner Wooster Invitational on Sept. 1 with a personal-record 26:51.7 over the 8K course.

The 5-8 freshman outside hitter has played in 15 matches and 49 sets for the West Liberty women’s volleyball team (3-13, 2-0 Mountain East Conference). Bogunovich had a season-high 13 kills in a 3-1 victory over Charleston to open conference play, Friday, Sept. 18. She is fourth on the team in kills with 70 and has 16 digs and 6.0 total blocks.

The 6-0, 230-pound linebacker, a true freshman, came off the bench and picked up five tackles and forced a fumble in Clarion’s 59-13 victory over Lackawanna, Saturday, Sept. 19. The Golden Eagles are 2-1 after the victory and Shepherd has seen action in all three games and has six tackles, two unassisted.

The 6-0, junior right side is having a solid season for the Canisius women’s volleyball team (1-9). Isroff leads the team with 88 kills and has 21 digs and 16.0 total blocks. She had a season-high 18 digs in a 3-2 loss to Mercyhurst. The effort gave her a .563 attack percentage. Isroff had a career-high 19 digs in a 3-2 victory over Siena last season. She played at Nova Southeastern as a freshman.

The junior had a good effort for the Youngstown State men’s golf team playing in his first tournament of the fall at the River Run Collegiate, Sept. 21-22 in Davidson, N.C. Kish finished tied for 21st in a field of 75 golfers with a 222 total on three rounds of 74. In the final round on Tuesday, his total included nine pars, two birdies and an eagle. The Penguins finished ninth out of 13 teams with an 898 total.
