Dan Campbell, Jared Goff pay classy tribute to Lions radio voice

· · 2 min read

Dan Campbell is incredibly popular in Detroit for plenty of reasons but his earnest humanity is somewhere near the top of the list. The Lions head coach isn’t shy about showing how he really feels and being open with all the highs and lows life throws. That element of his personality has remained unchanged whether Detroit has been dominating or struggling and it’s quite admirable.

Campbell took a moment after an emotional victory over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday to dedicate a game ball to someone in the team’s orbit going through a trying time.

The Detroit Lions faced an early and unexpectedly pivotal challenge on the road against the Arizona Cardinals. Amid a ton of warranted questions about a historically bad defense, the Lions got off to a slow start but quickly found their form en route to a 45-21 victory.

Before getting into all of the details and sharing his reaction to the win, Campbell took an opportunity to pay his respects to Lions radio play-by-play voice Dan Miller.

Miller, who has been on the call as Campbell has led the franchise back to relevance, missed Sunday’s game following the loss of his wife, Cindy.

“This ball goes to Dan Miller and his family,” Campbell said. “It was hard to hear what they went through. It’s been a tough road for Dan. This is for him. Salt of the earth, Dan is salt of the earth, and I know this has been hard. But now I know Cindy’s at peace, and we love you, Dan. So appreciate you.”

Yeah, we’re thinking about Dan. Yeah, sorry,” Goff said, getting noticeably choked up. “Yeah, we’re thinking about you, Dan. Love you, man.”

“He’s just an important piece of the culture here. He really is,” Goff continued. “His voice is Lions football, and he means a lot to us. He’s a part of our family, and I talk to him weekly. I know he’s in our hearts right now and all of our prayers.”
