BOSTON — The Arizona Diamondbacks made one last move ahead of their series against the Boston Red Sox, placing All-Star Ketel Marte on the restricted list and calling up infielder Jose Fernandez.

The move comes after the team made several changes earlier Monday, reinstating right-hander Justin Martinez and Jordan Lawlar from the injured list and optioning Geraldo Carrillo and Tyler Locklear. Marte’s move, however, was unexpected.

According to Arizona Central’s Nick Piecoro, Marte’s placement is due to an undisclosed reason. At the same time, MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert reports that the second baseman didn’t show up to Fenway Park as the team hoped to be there before game time.

Players placed on the restricted list are those who become unavailable due to unexpected personal, legal or non-baseball reasons.

This isn’t the first time the All-Star has been placed on the restricted list. Marte was previously placed on the list last summer after the All-Star break after failing to report back to the team amid ongoing issues outside of baseball, including the robbery of his home.

At this point, the Diamondbacks have not provided any further details on Marte’s absence or how long he is expected to remain on the restricted list.
