Pete Crow-Armstrong has reached the point where a quiet night on the field and on the plate is an outlier. And yet, despite the high standards many have come to have with the Chicago Cubs center fielder, he still manages to deliver on a nightly basis.

On Wednesday, Crow-Armstrong carried the Cubs’ offense on his back once more, going 3-4 from the plate with two home runs while driving in three runs in an 8-4 win for the Cubs over the Atlanta Braves to win the rubber match of a three-game series.

As much as Crow-Armstrong has been making these kinds of nights look routine, Cubs manager Craig Counsell knows that this level of greatness is not something to take for granted. In fact, Counsell believes that Crow-Armstrong’s 2026 season is going to be talked about for a long time as the stuff of legends.

“I said, ‘Alex, you don’t get to see things like this.’ … (the fans are) gonna tell their kids about it, they’re gonna tell their grandkids about it, seasons like this,” Counsell recounted the conversation he had with Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman, via Marquee Sports Network.

The traditional and advanced stats both agree that Crow-Armstrong is indeed in the middle of a legendary 2026 season. According to Fangraphs, he already has a WAR total of 10.0 on the season, while Baseball Reference has his WAR at 9.2.

And then there’s the fact that he now has 44 home runs and 105 runs batted in on the season. He’s only trailing Kyle Schwarber on the home runs leaderboard (Schwarber leads MLB with 45), and he’s third in RBIs, behind Alec Burleson and Sal Stewart.

Both the advanced metrics and the eye test also agree that he’s an elite defender at center field. He covers a ton of ground, makes the routine plays look easy, and he makes the difficult plays look routine. He has burst onto the forefront of the NL MVP race, and at this point, it does look like Crow-Armstrong will be the one to take home the award.
