The Dallas Cowboys have been very active spenders in the trade market in the last year, acquiring Quinnen Williams and, most recently, Joey Porter Jr. in some big trades.
But now, Jerry Jones and the Cowboys front office are without a massive crop of picks. They have only three picks inside the first six rounds of the 2027 NFL Draft, including a first-rounder.
But, even with depleted draft capital, Jonathan Jones of The Athletic is reporting that the Cowboys are still going to try and buy this season. Jones might not be done trying to improve this team, even with a weaker pool of draft picks to work with.
Cowboys might not be done buying despite weak trade capital
“You also cannot put it past the Dallas Cowboys to make another deal before the trade deadline,” Jones writes. “I checked in on this, and a source told me they’re going to turn over every stone in an attempt to get this thing fixed.”
Jones and the Cowboys are 2-3 after five weeks, losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and undrafted free agent quarterback Jalon Daniels in primetime in Week 5.
Their defense is a massive issue, and the addition of Porter likely won’t be enough to improve this team to be a real contender this year. They need more help to fix this defense.

It could be a pass rusher, with someone like Maxx Crosby, a more budget-friendly option like Khalil Mack, or someone in the middle like Josh Sweat that winds up being the Cowboys’ next trade target.
The Cowboys are going to be on the lookout for help on defense, but they could also look to improve their tight end room, with Jake Ferguson really struggling to begin the season.
Maybe David Njoku of the Los Angeles Chargers, Mason Taylor of the New York Jets, or a reunion with Dalton Schultz could be in play for the Cowboys this season.
Regardless of what Jones and the Cowboys are looking to do next, it’s apparent that they’re still searching for upgrades this season despite their depleted draft capital.
