Court stops EFCC from investigating Oyo finances

A Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, has restrained the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from investigating the finances of the Oyo State Government.

The court stopped the planned investigation on Wednesday.

The court, while halting the process, described the exercise as speculative.

Justice Nkeonye Maha, while delivering judgement in Suit No. FHC/IB/CS/61/2025 filed by the Oyo State Government under the leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde, acknowledged the EFCC’s statutory powers to investigate financial infractions and crimes.

The court, however, emphasised that such powers must be exercised strictly in line with the Constitution.

DAILY POST gathered that the EFCC had written a letter to the Accountant General of the state regarding the finances of the current administration.

The state government, through its counsel, who also doubles as the Attorney General of the state, Abiodun Aikomo, argued that the EFCC’s investigation must be evidence-based and not mere speculation.

Aikomo maintained that the agency lacks the power to investigate the finances of the administration at this material time.

The judge, while delivering the judgement, held that the EFCC’s proposed investigation into Oyo State’s finances was speculative.

The judge then ruled in favour of the state government and stopped the proposed investigation by the anti-graft agency.
