Country music star on son’s win over former NFL pro’s high school squad: ‘I done yelled a couple of times’

Bo Bryan, the son of country music star Luke Bryan, led his Battle Ground (Tenn.) high school football team to a 41-18 win Saturday over former NFL quarterback Philip Rivers’ St. Michael Catholic of Alabama.

The three-star quarterback finished 16 of 21 passing for 375 yards and three touchdowns on the day. The day was highlighted by an 80-yard screen pass for a touchdown to four-star receiver Maximus Curry, the son of 2019 Mr. Olympia Brandon Curry.

Luke Bryan was in attendance and certainly showed proud-papa moments as Bo Bryan started strong, finishing the first half 10 of 15 for 216 yards and two scores.

“I done yelled a couple of times, so I might be a little scratchy up there tonight,” Luke Bryan told AL.com at halftime of his son’s first varsity start. “But this is a dream come true. Being in Tennessee we thought we would just be playing other teams from the state. But it’s great to be able to come to south Alabama. My roots are in south Georgia high school football, so I know what this is about, and it’s a treat.”

Bo Bryan, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound senior, has scholarship offers from Austin Peay, Eastern Kentucky, East Tennessee State, North Alabama and UT-Martin.

St. Michael, meanwhile, was dealt a blow early when N.C. State quarterback commit Gunner Rivers, the son of coach Philip Rivers, left late in the first quarter with a knee injury.

“He couldn’t go,” Philip Rivers told AL.com. “He was going to try it. We’ll have to get it looked at tomorrow and re-evaluate it. I was a little more confident going into halftime, but they kind of looked at it again. We’ll have to see. I don’t think it’s season-ending by any means, but it’s not just a thigh bruise like we thought. Too bad too because that was a good team and a good game.”

According to the report, Gunner Rivers was injured on St. Michael’s second drive of the game. He was 3-of-4 for 84 yards and a 26-yard touchdown on a screen pass to Nygel Mitchell.

His team trailed 7-6 at the time, though the Cardinals were in the Battle Ground red zone when the injury occurred.
