Could Cowboys trade with Steelers to acquire familiar face for OL depth?

· · 2 min read

The Dallas Cowboys don’t have the depth expected out of their offensive line. While the primary issue is that their backup tackle positions aren’t inspiring much confidence, that problem isn’t relegated to the reserves. Dallas has better hopes for Tyler Guyton than they did in the spring, but Terence Steele has seemingly regressed, and their understudies aren’t lighting the world on fire.

The team is much better situated in the starting sector along the interior, with Tyler Smith, Cooper Beebe and Tyler Booker forming one of the league’s top trios up the middle. Behind them, though, only TJ Bass is seen as someone capable of stepping in and starting if called upon. Should Dallas make a trade to secure a more secure solution than the rest of the current roster offers?

What about a familiar face? There’s rumblings out of Pittsburgh that the club might be listening to offers for Brock Hoffman. That’s right, former top Cowboys reserve could be made available.

Hoffman played for the Cowboys for the previous four seasons, starting 16 games as their top interior backup. He knows the system extremely well. Facing restricted free agency, the team opted to only tender TJ Bass this past spring, as both top reserves were in a similar boat, but Bass was seen as the higher upside player.

The Cowboys signed Matt Hennessy as Hoffman’s replacement, but he suffered a serious neck injury and is out for the year.

If the Cowboys decided to move Tyler Smith back to left tackle, Bass could start at guard while Hoffman has been better as center. Bass received the $5.8 million tender, Hoffman was left to sign a $2.5 million deal with his former head coach for the 2022 through 2024 seasons, as Mike McCarthy took over the Steelers.

But Hoffman didn’t win the starting right guard job and now there’s speculation he could be used as a trade chip for other parts the Steelers might need.

With only $1.75 million in base salary for the year, could the Cowboys consider sending out a player such as Luke Schoonmaker or Marist Liufau?
