Comparing Texas A&M and Kentucky's strengths, weaknesses before Week 3

No. 8 Texas A&M (2-0) will host Kentucky (1-1) in Week 3 for a mid-afternoon showdown in Kyle Field after the Aggies blew out Arizona State 48-20 behind starting quarterback Marcel Reed’s three touchdowns and two pick-six defensive scores from Edge Marco Jones and senior cornerback Julio Humphrey.

The teams have not met on the field since 2018, when the Aggies, under then-first-year coach Jimbo Fisher and quarterback Kellen Mond, helped lead A&M to a 20-14 overtime win over 13th-ranked Kentucky, which finished 10-3 that year. This season, Texas A&M has outscored Missouri State and the Sun Devils 98-20, while Kentucky is coming off a blowout 45-17 home loss to Alabama after holding a late lead.

On paper, Kentucky ranks higher in two key statistical categories, including explosive plays (54th), where Texas A&M ranks 131st, despite possessing one of the deepest wide receiver rotations in the country, which is primarily due to the Aggies’ offensive line issues and starting quarterback Marcel Reed’s lack of time in the pocket.

However, Texas A&M’s scoring offense ranks 16th, and its scoring defense ranks 15th, compared to Kentucky’s 113th-ranked scoring defense, which gives the Aggies an obvious advantage on Saturday. Most importantly, coach Mike Elko’s 8th-ranked third-down defense will determine how much of a chance the Wildcats have of keeping within striking distance throughout the game.

Lastly, Texas A&M’s 74th-ranked rushing defense will only improve if the offensive line does a better job opening running lanes and freshmen KJ Edwards and Carsyn Baker get more playing time. The Aggies will face Kentucky’s 59th-ranked rushing defense, which allowed 155 yards and three touchdowns against Alabama in Week 2.
