Commanders add veteran OL depth ahead of first padded practice

· · 1 min read

The Washington Commanders enjoyed a day off on Sunday, their first since beginning training camp last Wednesday. The team will have its first practice in pads on Monday. The day off allowed general manager Adam Peters to make a much-needed roster move.

The Commanders revealed they had signed center Trey Hill. In a corresponding move, they released cornerback Tre Hawkins. Hill was one of 10 players that Washington worked out on Saturday.

The Commanders needed to sign a center when starting center Nick Allegretti suffered a calf strain on the first day of training camp. Julian Good-Jones and rookie sixth-round pick Matt Gulbin were the only other centers on the roster, and they have a combined two NFL snaps to their names. Head coach Dan Quinn said Allegretti would be out for around a week.

Hill, 26, played collegiately at the University of Georgia, starting 36 games in three seasons before entering the 2021 NFL Draft. He was a sixth-round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals, where he spent the first four seasons of his NFL career. He appeared in 25 games for Cincinnati and made three starts.

In 2025, Hill signed with the Green Bay Packers, but was released during final cuts in August. The Chicago Bears signed Hill to their practice squad in September, where he spent the rest of the season. In January 2026, Hill signed a reserve/futures contract with the Tennessee Titans. He was waived in June.
