Colts coach evaluates backup QB competition with Richardson, Leonard

One of several training camp battles taking place during Indianapolis Colts training camp is for the backup quarterback role, with Anthony Richardson and Riley Leonard competing for that job.

Head coach Shane Steichen said on Wednesday that Leonard and Richardson would rotate series with the second-team offense. Offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter called the competition “neck and neck” following Thursday’s practice.

Through two practices, Richardson is a combined 8-for-10 passing, according to Jake Arthur of Roundtable Sports. Although Arthur noted on Day 2 that, despite the completions, Richardson’s “timing and anticipation were hard to come by.”

Leonard is 5-for-8 passing over the two days. Both quarterbacks have one interception, and Arthur added that they’re each “holding onto the ball too long.”

As Steichen and Cooter continue to evaluate this competition, what exactly are they looking for?

“We’re looking for guys that can move the offense, guys that can move the team and potentially win games when needed,” Cooter said, via Colts.com. “… (And) generally doing that by playing really good football at a consistent level.”

Richardson’s trade request remains on the table, and it’s possible he ends up elsewhere. However, as GM Chris Ballard said, the Colts aren’t going to “give him away” either.
