Colorado Rockies vs. St. Louis Cardinals game discussion: Ryan Feltner vs. Kyle Leahy

Sometimes you’re the broom, sometimes you’re in the dustpan.

After sweeping the Kansas City Royals in a three-game series, the Colorado Rockies found themselves on the other end, dropping three straight to the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Rockies enjoyed a nice Thursday off after the homestand and will try to turn their fortunes around under the shadow of the Gateway Arch as they kick off a weekend series against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Rockies enter the series at 45-70, while the Cards sit in the middle of the NL Central at 57-58.

PECOTA projections at the beginning of the season had the Cardinals only reaching 66 wins. They are nearly about to eclipse that prediction and are four games out of the last Wild Card spot as they float around .500 on the year. St. Louis went 10-18 in July and are 3-2 to start August, going 4-6 in their last 10 games.

As for the pitching matchup, St. Louis will start Boulder, Colorado’s own Kyle Leahy. The Colorado Mesa University product is 7-4 with a 3.44 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 21 starts. Leahy hasn’t logged a decision in his last four games but has three quality starts in that span. In his last start, he went six innings and gave up just one run on six hits as the Cardinals fell to the Toronto Blue Jays 3-1.

The Rockies turn again to Ryan Feltner who has shown lots of resilience in his last starts as he’s struggled with command at times but found ways to battle back and keep the team competitive. After notching a win in his last start, a 12-6 victory over the Royals where he was shaky early but locked in late, he enters with a 4-5 record, a 5.75 ERA, and a 1.46 WHIP across 16 starts.

Both teams traded vets or expiring contracts for prospects at the deadline. With their rosters settled (for now…), each team continues their path into the backend of the season.
