Cody Gakpo chooses Manchester City over Spurs
According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Cody Gakpo has decided to leave Liverpool for Manchester City, choosing Enzo Maresca’s side over Tottenham Hotspur as his preferred destination.
It was reported that Gakpo had agreed to join Spurs, but City have entered the race since and prompted a change of heart from the versatile forward. The parties are now in talks to see if an agreement can be found.
Liverpool are expected to demand a fee of £85million for the services of the 27-year-old forward, and City are thought to be willing to meet that price after selling Savinho and Omar Marmoush to Spurs. On the other hand, the transfer is expected to go through only if Liverpool can sign another attacker, after completing the signing of Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain. The clock is ticking – the transfer window closes at 11PM BST on Tuesday.
Having gone through an extremely underwhelming 2025-26 season – along with the rest of Liverpool – Gakpo was heavily criticized, but he started this campaign with a goal and an assist in two Premier League matches, following three goals in four matches for Netherlands at this summer’s World Cup.
