· · 4 min read

Day 8 of Cleveland Browns training camp took place Thursday, August 6. Injuries continue to play a factor in deciding what the offensive line will be.

1. Welcome to Joe Thomas: Before practice, head coach Todd Monken said that he offered a job to Hall of Fame LT Joe Thomas for a job on the coaching staff. Thomas didn’t want to commit to something every day, but Monken said that it was fine, and for him to come help whenever he wanted.

Speaking of the offensive line, they were still a bit thin on the day as Cleveland was back to wearing pads, with OL Elgton Jenkins, C Parker Brailsford, and OG Teven Jenkins all missing practice. Later in practice, OG Zak Zinter was hauled off on the cart with some injury.

2. Drill of the Day: Cleveland did a ball control gauntlet drill for running backs, wide receivers, and tight ends, with their jobs being to hang on to the ball through the various contact.

3. Some Extra Reps for Floriea: Could we be seeing a shot of WR Luke Floriea sneaking onto the roster? According to Zac Jackson, he got some reps with the first-team offense, and also caught this pass from QB Deshaun Watson on the boundary:

4. Tyson With the INT: During 7-on-7 drills, CB Tyson Campbell intercepted a pass thrown by QB Deshaun Watson. It sounded like Campbell hadn’t participated in drills yesterday when the quarterbacks had their success.

5. Another Tip+Pick: We’ve seen the Browns’ safeties do a good job of getting their hands on passes in some manner. It’s hard to tell in fast motion if this pass was tipped by S Grant Delpit, or dropped by WR Denzel Boston. Either way, the ball was deflected and picked off by CB Myles Harden on the throw from QB Shedeur Sanders:

6. Concepcion Continues to Thrive: Another day, and another nice play from WR KC Concepcion. This time, he went up and snagged a ball for a touchdown pass by QB Shedeur Sanders from the 15 yard line.

7. Competition Between Fano and Jones: Before practice, offensive line coach George Warhop talked about the battle between Spencer Fano and Dawand Jones at left tackle:

8. Chugging Along: It’s been a quiet camp for K Andre Szmyt, which seems to be a good thing. He has the kicking job firmly locked down as he enters his second year as the team’s kicker:

9. Brownies: CB Michael Coats Jr. had a pass break up on an end zone pass for WR Gage Larvadain. … QB Deshaun Watson and QB Shedeur Sanders got some post-practice work in with wide receivers. … QB Shedeur Sanderssigned autographs and took pictures with fans after practice. … Cleveland worked out WR Ben Patterson, WR Stephon Johnson, WR Romello Brinson, OG Joshua Gray, OT Raiqwon O’Neal, DT Evan Anderson, and DB Jeadyn Lukas. … Lane Adkins had this insight on QB Dillon Gabriel:

Big difference in Dillon Gabriel this summer is, he keeps his eyes downfield consistently and you can see where/when he checks out/down.

He’s throwing the ball well, has been consistent throughout process

10. Up Next: The Browns will practice on Friday at 1:30 PM ET. It will be open to the public.
