Cifuentes desires ‘sustained’ performance from Portland

Portland Timbers boss Marti Cifuentes desires a “sustained, good performance” when his side take on Austin FC this weekend.

The Timbers are ninth in the Western Conference after holding Los Angeles to a 1-1 draw last time out, which came after a 3-1 win over San Diego FC.

Portland have lost just one of their seven MLS games since the World Cup break (W4 D2), with Cifuentes helping turn their form around after the dismissal of Phil Neville.

The Timbers have enjoyed a week of uninterrupted training, while Austin were knocked out of the Leagues Cup in the quarter-final stage by Toluca.

Austin played the majority of the tie with 10 men after a straight red card for Joseph Rosales.

Cifuentes admitted it was hard to analyse their opponents after the sending off, but still has a good idea of what to expect from the visiting side at Providence Park.

“It true that perhaps it’s difficult to get a lot of conclusions from a game where they got a red card after only 40 minutes,” said Cifuentes.

“But they have been a team that have been slightly better on the road than they have been at home.

“We know as well that there is a toll on those long trips, but I expect a competitive team. They switched the manager, so perhaps they are in a bit of a transition moment, but they still have good players.

“It’s going to be a difficult game, which we are going to need to start on the front foot. I want to see a sustained, good performance.”

Portland Timbers – Kristoffer Velde

Over the Timbers’ last six MLS matches, Kristoffer Velde has directly contributed to seven goals (one goal, six assists).

He’s the sixth Timbers player to record six or more assists over a span of six MLS matches, after Antony, Diego Chara, Yimmi Chara, Evander and Diego Valeri.

Brendan Hines-Ike scored his second goal of the MLS season in Austin FC’s 1–1 home draw with the Philadelphia Union last time out.

Since joining Austin in 2024, all four of Hines-Ike’s MLS goals have been on headers, tying him with Guilherme Biro for most headed goals by an Austin player over the last three seasons.

MATCH PREDICTION: PORTLAND TIMBERS WIN

Portland have lost only one of their last nine meetings with Austin (W6 D2), though the last meeting, played in April 2025, ended in a scoreless draw.

The Timbers have allowed only one goal in their last four meetings with Austin but have scored just once themselves in the last three.

Portland are on a three-match winning streak at home in MLS play, netting multiple goals in each victory. Since the beginning of the 2018 season, Portland’s longest regular-season winning streak at Providence Park is four games (once in 2018, 2023 and 2024).

Austin ended a 14-match winless run in away matches across all competitions (D3 L11) with a 2–1 win at Seattle in their last road match. The Verde have not earned a result in consecutive away matches since July 2025, when they followed a draw with a pair of victories.
