A massive late-game blunder cost the Washington Commanders a divisional victory against the New York Giants. The locker room was fuming after their divisional matchup ended in a bitter 27-27 tie.

Washington had a chance to win in overtime, with the offense at the Giants’ 24-yard line and only seconds remaining. But the Commanders failed to get a field goal attempt off before time expired.

With roughly 12 seconds left, quarterback Jayden Daniels took a catastrophic sack instead of throwing the football safely out of bounds. Washington had no timeouts remaining, leaving the offense scrambling to get set. The kicking unit could not make it onto the field before the clock hit zero, ending the game in a tie.

The sequence raised questions about whether the Commanders knew they had no timeouts left. Several players avoided giving a direct answer, but offensive lineman Chris Paul addressed it when asked by 7News DC’s Scott Abraham.

“Yes, that was talked about in the huddle,” Paul admitted.

Did the Commanders offense know they didn’t have any timeouts left on the final drive of overtime?

Paul’s response only made the disaster a harder pill to swallow. The players knew they had no timeouts, yet Washington still failed to get into position for a potential game-winning field goal.

Wide receiver Terry McLaurin did not hide his disgust with the breakdown after the final whistle. Speaking after the tie, he admitted that “it feels like a loss.” He also called the final play “unacceptable.”

Instead of leaving with a divisional victory, the Commanders were left to deal with a frustrating finish that they could have avoided. Washington moves to a 1-3-1 record with the tie and now sits at the bottom of the NFC East.
