Chris Gotterup's fifth PGA Tour title returns him top 10 of FedEx Cup
Chris Gotterup led the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup points standings over the first five weeks of the season, powered by victories at the Sony Open and WM Phoenix Open.
He’s been making cuts (16 of 17 this season), but the high finishes dried up, and Gotterup fell to 12th on the points list entering the week of the John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.
Gotterup is back among the top 10 in a big way.
His fifth PGA Tour title, thanks to a closing 62, moved him to sixth on the points list, the only change among the top 30 with most of the big names taking the week off.
Scottie Scheffler still holds onto his points lead entering two weeks in the United Kingdom for the Scottish Open (July 9-12) and the British Open (July 16-19). With 1,250 points going to the winners of those tournaments (750 for the Open, the final major of the season), there should be a lot more movement.
There are seven more FedEx Cup points events on the schedule, four coming in the next two weeks. The ISCO Championship is being played opposite the Scottish Open and the Corales Puntacana Championship is opposite the British Open. The winners of those two events will get 300 FedEx Cup points.
After that, it comes down to the tournaments in Detroit, Minneapolis and Greensboro, N.C. for players to reach the top 70 and qualify for the FedExCup playoffs.
Austin Smotherman is No. 70 this week with 462 points. David Lipsky trails him by only two points and Brian Harman by three.
The No. 80 player on the points list, Andrew Novak, is 58 points behind. He could make up that ground by finishing 13th or higher in the Scottish Open.
