Chiefs star looks better than expected early in NFL training camp
The NFL has spent two offseasons wondering whether Travis Kelce still has another vintage season left in him.
Kansas City may finally have its answer. Kelce has reportedly arrived for his 14th Chiefs training camp, moving comfortably and reconnecting with Patrick Mahomes after months of retirement speculation. The mustache got the attention. The more important detail is that the 36-year-old looks engaged rather than like a veteran reluctantly dragging himself through one final August.
Kelce’s 2025 season was productive by normal tight-end standards, but clearly below peak. He caught 76 passes for 851 yards and five touchdowns – his fewest receptions since 2015. And he still led Kansas City in all three categories.

Training-camp clips do not reverse age, and looking fresh in early August does not guarantee Kelce’s legs will feel the same once the season kicks.
But the Chiefs do not need the 1,400-yard version of Kelce anymore. They need the player who can still diagnose coverage before the snap, settle into the one opening Mahomes sees and turn a broken third down into yet another first down. Noah Gray recently described Kelce as someone who raises the level of everyone around him, which explains why Kansas City still values him more than the box score.
A healthy Mahomes and a deeper offense should also allow Andy Reid to manage Kelce instead of treating every game like an emergency. Fewer empty-calorie snaps could mean more useful ones when the Chiefs actually need him.

Kelce is not beating Father Time. Nobody does. It’s quite literally science. Still, he looks sharper, motivated, and ready to make one more serious run.
The Chiefs star will never be back in his prime. He does, however, look ready to roll.
