Travis Kelce did not need convincing about Patrick Mahomes. After the Chiefs dismantled the Broncos 31-10 on Monday Night Football in Mahomes’ first game since tearing his ACL and LCL last December, the veteran tight end explained why he never doubted what he saw at Arrowhead Stadium.

“He was saying it all week, man. He just needed that first hit and he was going to be Patty Mahomes,” Kelce told reporters after the game. “And you can see that 15 is starting to get comfortable again, and I think next week we’ll even see him take his game to another level.”

Mahomes delivered that moment early, scrambling 15 yards up the middle for a touchdown on Kansas City’s opening drive. He finished 15 of 27 for 184 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, numbers he himself called short of his best, though the scoreboard never reflected it.

Kelce was more interested in the bigger picture. “It just felt good to be out there with my dogs, man,” he said. “We’ve got a really fun team this year, a lot of guys that care about each other and go out there and bust their tail for each other every single day. And it’s not necessarily about them or what happened last year, it’s about what we’ve got going on this year.”

He also raved about the ground game that carried the offense. Kansas City piled up 220 rushing yards, including a 60-yard touchdown burst from Kenneth Walker III in the third quarter. “We love blocking for him and we know it’s a touchdown waiting to happen on every single carry,” Kelce said.

Kelce contributed a 59-yard catch and run of his own, and he did not hesitate when asked if he thought he would reach the end zone on it. “Of course I did. I had guys blocking for me downfield, man, and it’s a beautiful thing when you’ve got the cavalry out in front,” he said. “You’ve just got to find a way to get in the end zone.”

Kansas City hosts the Colts on Sunday Night Football next week, and Kelce is already expecting more.
