Chiefs coach reveals Travis Kelce lined up for ’emergency’ position change

The Kansas City Chiefs are back in action this weekend following their early Bye Week and a new position could be in the offing for Travis Kelce.

Following a number of years failing to secure 1,000 receiving yards, the 2026 season has started off well for Kelce now Patrick Mahomes has returned from injury. The last two games were not quite too profitable for the tight end but a big opportunity for Kelce awaits against the winless Los Angeles Chargers.

The last outing against the Las Vegas Raiders only returned 15 yards for Kelce who will be looking to get back on track on Sunday. However, there could be a new role for the veteran tight end after what unfolded in the NFL last weekend.

The emergency position Travis Kelce could play for the Kansas City Chiefs

Last weekend, the Jacksonville Jaguars passed on a number of opportunities to go for a field goal in their London game against the Philadelphia Eagles. So many points were left on the field by Liam Coen as he missed fourth down opportunities.

The reason behind not taking the field goal points was because the Jaguars were without their usual long snapper. This has left teams across the league considering their options and the Chiefs have already thought of Kelce as a potential replacement for James Winchester.

“I tell you, I definitely thought about it, and I said to myself, “We need to get Kelce, because Kelce’s our guy.” Kelce, you can dial him up in two snaps, and he’s ready to go, but we need to practise it. The other guy that does it now also is great: Noah Gray. Two really good athletes that fit the bill,” said special teams coach Dave Toub.

Snapping the ball runs in the Kelce family with Travis’ brother, Jason, enjoying an exceptional career as the centre for the Philadelphia Eagles. It would still be a big ask for Kelce to fill in as the emergency long snapper but he knows exactly what it is like to deal with in-game pressure.

Fortunately for the Chiefs, they are not going into this weekend’s game with any injury concerns to their long snapper but it is clearly something the team have had to consider after seeing just how much the Jaguars struggled at the weekend.
