Chelsea agree terms with Frenchman to complete stunning deadline day move
Chelsea have taken a significant step in their search for a new midfielder after agreeing personal terms with Roma star Manu Koné.
The France international has emerged as one of Xabi Alonso’s preferred deadline-day targets, with Enzo Fernandez edging closer to a move to Manchester City.
Chelsea are now pushing to strike an agreement with Roma before the window closes, although the Serie A club remain reluctant to lose such an important player this late.
Chelsea agree terms with midfielder Koné
According to FootballTransfers, Chelsea have reached an agreement with Koné over personal terms and are now working on the club-to-club side of the deal.
The 25-year-old made 37 appearances across all competitions for Roma last season, scoring twice, and has become a key figure in their midfield.
Chelsea’s interest has accelerated after their alternative move for Monaco’s Lamine Camara ran into complications.
Koné is now viewed as a serious option to reshape the midfield if Fernandez completes his expected switch to Man City.
However, Roma are not making negotiations easy. football.london reports that Chelsea have been given encouragement over a potential deal, but Roma’s reluctance to sell means a substantial offer may still be required before deadline day ends.
Koné could transform the midfield at Stamford Bridge
Koné would not be a like-for-like replacement for Fernandez, and that could actually make the transfer more interesting.
While Enzo is primarily valued for his passing range and control of possession, Koné brings greater athleticism, ball-carrying ability and defensive intensity.
Alongside Moises Caicedo, he could give Chelsea an extremely powerful midfield pairing capable of winning possession and driving forward quickly.
Agreeing personal terms is important, but convincing Roma to sell one of their key players with only hours remaining is a much harder challenge. Chelsea cannot afford to sanction Fernandez’s departure and then discover that their replacement deal cannot be completed.
From a squad-building perspective, though, the logic is clear.
If Chelsea receive a huge fee for Fernandez and secure Koné for considerably less, Alonso could reinvest the difference elsewhere while still adding an established international midfielder.
