Chargers take sole control of No. 1 pick following Week 7 upset
The Chargers entered Week 7 at 0-6, sitting at the bottom of the NFL standings. After an upset on Sunday in which the Dolphins defeated the Jets, the Bolts emerged as the NFL’s only remaining winless team.
If the season ended today, the road to the No. 1 overall pick would run directly through Los Angeles.
The Chargers exit their bye week to face a three-game stretch against the Rams, Texans, and Ravens. Given their opponents, a slide to 0-9 is entirely possible.
11 games remain, and tiebreaker metrics like Strength of Schedule will fluctuate before April. But once the NFL clears the October threshold, the Chargers won’t need scoreboard help or complex math. If they keep losing, they keep the No. 1 pick.
If they pick first, Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith would be the likely selection. Selecting a wideout at No. 1 overall would make history, the first time since Keyshawn Johnson in 1996. For a Chargers offense desperate for an identity, Smith is a plug-and-play cornerstone.
