The Los Angeles Chargers may be struggling to find consistency across the board, but offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel made it clear that the team has not lost faith in running back Omarion Hampton.

Hampton’s role has decreased over the last two weeks, raising questions about whether the former first-round pick has fallen down the Chargers’ depth chart. According to Kris Rhim on X, McDaniel dismissed that idea and insisted Hampton’s reduced snaps have nothing to do with a lack of confidence.

“I don’t see any change in terms of the depth chart at all. I felt I was underutilizing a strength,” McDaniel said.

The Chargers coach doubled down when asked about the situation, making it clear that Hampton remains an important part of the team’s plans.

“I can’t make the statement more emphatic: it’s not because I lost any faith in O at all,” McDaniel said.

That should be encouraging for Hampton, but his lack of snaps is still concerning. The former first-round pick has not gotten the start to his career that the Chargers hoped for, and his Year 2 workload has not reflected the role expected from a player drafted so highly. With Los Angeles struggling to find consistency throughout the offense, getting Hampton more involved should be a priority.

Injuries have continued to derail the Chargers’ expectations, but the team cannot afford to let those problems become an excuse for failing to maximize its young talent.

McDaniel clearly still believes Hampton can be a difference-maker.

Now, the Chargers need to make sure their actions match their words and get their former first-round pick back into a bigger role.
