· · 2 min read

The Los Angeles Chargers have made a major statement about the future of their defense, agreeing to a historic contract extension with star safety Derwin James. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, James and the Chargers have agreed to a three-year extension worth $75.6 million, once again putting him at the top of the NFL safety market.

James Reclaims The Title Of Highest-Paid Safety

With the new extension, James becomes the highest-paid safety in the NFL for the second time in his career.

Baltimore Ravens standout Kyle Hamilton had recently become the league’s highest-paid player at the position with an average annual value of $25.1 million. James’ new agreement now moves him back into the top spot and resets the market once again.

The timing of the deal also makes sense for both sides. James was entering the final year of the four-year, $76.53 million contract extension he signed back in August of 2022. Rather than allowing uncertainty to build around his future, the Chargers moved aggressively to lock up one of their cornerstone players before he approached free agency.

A Franchise Cornerstone Since Day One

The Chargers selected James in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, and he immediately made an impact.

His rookie season showcased exactly why so many believed he was a special talent. James earned first-team All-Pro honors during his first year in the league and quickly established himself as one of football’s most versatile defensive players.

Over the years, he has become far more than just a productive safety. James has served as the emotional leader of the defense and one of the faces of the organization. His ability to impact games as a tackler, pass defender, blitzer, and leader has made him invaluable.

Production Continues To Match The Reputation

James showed once again last season why the Chargers felt comfortable making another major financial commitment.

In 16 regular-season games, he totaled 94 tackles, seven passes defended, and three interceptions while earning second-team All-Pro honors.

Across seven seasons, James has compiled 684 tackles, 12 interceptions, and five Pro Bowl selections. The Chargers are not just paying for past production. They are investing in the belief that one of the NFL’s best defensive players will continue leading their defense for years to come.
