Chargers could face major decision on Jim Harbaugh after 0-4 start

· · 2 min read

The Chargers‘ 0-4 start to the season is not what many expected.

Through the first four weeks, the Chargers have been hampered by a confusing and disjointed offense, an inconsistent defense, and downright awful coaching.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel have been underwhelming to start the season, and it looks like they’ll continue down this road.

If the Chargers can’t find a way to turn things around, Harbaugh could be axed in Los Angeles.

“Barring a turnaround, it feels like someone will shoulder the blame in Los Angeles. Harbaugh has a massive five-year deal (reportedly worth $80 million) and has built up sweat equity with back-to-back 11-win seasons,” ESPN Jeremy Fowler wrote.

“Perhaps the Chargers would ask him to stay on and rebuild the staff this offseason, depending on how things look over the next few months. And things look bleak, to be clear. But he essentially just rebuilt the staff, so not sure that’s a solution.”

ESPN’s Dan Graziano believes someone will pay the price if the Chargers can’t figure things out this season.

“Yeah, barring a massive turnaround, you have to think someone ends up in trouble with the Chargers. Head coach? GM? Quarterback? All of the above?”

Firing Harbaugh is easier said than done.

For starters, his lucrative contract mentioned above wouldn’t be easy to get out of. Ownership would have to swallow a massive buyout to part ways with him prematurely.

Harbaugh’s identity is all over this current Chargers team. They handed him the keys to the car and then some, but it’s clear things are not working.

If the Chargers keep him, they may face a down-to-the-studs rebuild. Will Harbaugh want to be part of it? That will be the biggest question if they decide to go down that road.

Heading into Week 5, the Bolts still have plenty of football left to turn their season around. We’ll see if things progress.
