Chargers could face difficult Jim Harbaugh decision if season keeps spiraling

The Chargers have a lot to reflect on as they hit their bye week.

Los Angeles has endured early bye weeks under Harbaugh, both coming in Week 5 during his first two years. In Year 3, the Chargers face the same situation; however, for the first time in his tenure, the team is not in a good spot.

The Chargers sit winless through their first six weeks, with no sign of a turnaround. Many have called for offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel’s job, and they have a point. The offense has been abysmal, ranking among the league’s worst in major categories like total yards and points per game. They also rank dead last in EPA per play.

It’s been a nightmare season for the Chargers and because of that Jim Harbaugh’s future has come into question.

ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler presented an interesting question that the Chargers may have no choice but to answer if their season continues to plummet.

“The bigger question looms: What do the Chargers do with Harbaugh if the season continues to sink? It’s not the Chargers’ style to pay a coach millions to not coach. But as a few industry sources pointed out, a bottom-of-the-league finish would force the Chargers to do some soul-searching, in part because the Chargers don’t bring in as much revenue for their home games as other teams do, because they don’t own their home stadium. Maintaining excitement is important in that regard.”

This season is by far Harbaugh’s worst start of his coaching career. The offense has been a disaster, as nothing appears to be going right for that side of the ball. Injuries have piled up, as they did last season, and it’s certainly a lost cause.

Another question that’s fair to ask is: How long is Harbaugh’s leash?

Fowler noted that it depends on how the Chargers season ends.

“Harbaugh is coming off back-to-back 11-win seasons, which typically fosters a grace period to manage the low points. That might be the case here. But if the Chargers can’t turn things around and are looking at a 3-14 finish, then what?”

The 2026 season was primed to be a stellar one for the Chargers; instead, it’s been riddled with injuries, poor performances, and questions about the coaching staff.

All eyes may start turning to the 2027 season in a few weeks.
