Casey Mears' race recap in the 2026 Chase race at Talladega
Casey Mears experienced a disappointing conclusion to Sunday’s YellaWood 500 at Talladega Superspeedway, finishing 40th after a mechanical problem ended his afternoon. The veteran driver qualified 34th in his No. 62 Chevrolet and entered the event hoping to produce a solid performance against a competitive field.
Mears faced the challenge of advancing through the field during an opening stage dominated by aggressive fuel-saving strategies. While much of the field remained in large drafting formations, the RFK Racing drivers separated themselves from the competition, creating an unusual running order.
Mears continued competing through the opening stages while avoiding the early problems that affected several other drivers. However, his afternoon ended after completing 131 laps when a mechanical issue prevented him from continuing.
The retirement left Mears last in the 40-car field, ending his opportunity to capitalize on the attrition that followed. The race eventually featured two major multicar accidents, with several prominent championship contenders also failing to finish.
Although Mears was unable to complete the event, his participation added another NASCAR Cup Series appearance to his lengthy racing career. The veteran will look to build upon his Talladega experience if additional opportunities to compete in NASCAR’s premier division become available.
