The New York Mets got off to a terrible start to the season, and unlike what the Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox did, which was to fire their managers early in the season, the Mets held onto Carlos Mendoza.

That didn’t last too long, as the Mets went on to fire Mendoza later in the season once things were truly at a breaking point. Andy Green was chosen as the interim manager, but he wasn’t their first choice.

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, Carlos Beltran turned down the mid-season manager job from the Mets. The reason why is simple: he had commitments already to the Hall of Fame.

“The New York Mets have yet to conduct a managerial search for the 2027 season, but their first choice appears to be Hall of Famer Carlos Beltran,” Nightengale reports. “They actually expressed interest in having him take over after the firing of Carlos Mendoza. Yet, he passed with his Hall of Fame commitments this summer…”

Beltran, the Hall of Fame outfielder who spent the majority of his 20-year career with the Mets and Kansas City Royals, had a chance to be the manager for the Mets this season.

But, with his Hall of Fame induction later this summer alongside Andruw Jones and Jeff Kent, Beltran declined, leaving the Mets to turn to Green as their interim manager.

The 49-year-old was previously the Mets manager before he stepped down amid the Houston Astros cheating scandal. Now, a few years removed from that, and after his Hall of Fame induction, he’s a legitimate option to be the manager for the Mets in the future.

The Mets tried going from one Carlos to another, but after firing Mendoza for the Mets’ struggles during the 2026 season, Beltran opted to decline the chance to be the Mets’ manager, focusing on his Hall of Fame induction later this year.

It’s an understandable decision from Beltran, as there’s little reason for him to put his Hall of Fame induction aside to join a Mets team about to clean house at the trade deadline.

He could join the club after the 2026 season as their manager, as Nightengale is reporting he’s seemingly their first choice. But, for now, he’s turned down the Mets manager job mid-season for a very understandable reason: his Hall of Fame induction.
