Caleb Williams Watch: How Bears QB performed on Day 3 of training camp

· · 3 min read

The Chicago Bears were back at training camp on Friday for their third practice of the summer, and there was plenty to break down from Day 3, including the performance of quarterback Caleb Williams.

Williams is entering his third season following a breakout sophomore campaign where he set a franchise single-season passing record, led an NFL record seven fourth quarter comebacks (including the postseason) while leading Chicago to an 11-6 record, NFC North title and playoff win. That was all in one season with head coach Ben Johnson. Now, all eyes are on Williams this summer as he continues to develop under Johnson and make a huge leap in Year 3.

We’re taking a look at the good, the bad and the noteworthy with Williams from the third practice of Bears training camp:

Williams continues to stack good practices to open training camp, and Friday was no exception. According to Adam Jahns, “Williams and the offense put together another explosive day in the passing game.” Added Zack Pearson: “Williams delivered some really accurate throws, including a strike over the middle to Rome Odunze for about 26 yards. He kept looking for Colston Loveland as well as the tight end had a big day out there.”

The connection between Williams and tight end Colston Loveland was on full display during Friday’s practice, as the pair accounted for a number of highlights and three total touchdowns. According to Adam Jahns, “It included a short touchdown pass in the first red-zone period that started with the two sacks by the defense. He also beat rookie safety Dillon Thieneman in single coverage for a first down early in practice.” Loveland also played a key role in the two-minute drill at the end of practice, where Williams marched them down the field and completed a 14-yard touchdown to his young tight end to win the end-of-game situation.

Once again, there wasn’t a whole lot of bad from Williams during practice. In fact, he was pretty much near perfect. His lone blemish was his first interception of the summer. That interception came during a red zone drill in 7-on-7 on a pass intended for tight end Colston Loveland. According to Adam Jahns, “Williams chased Johnson down to prevent the ‘pick six.'”

Perhaps the most encouraging thing for Williams and the offense during Friday’s practice was how they delivered during the two-minute drill, which was an area that head coach Ben Johnson stressed they needed to improve.

The situation, according to Bear Report: The Bears started at their own 39 with 1:37 left in the second quarter with a tie game 10-10. Williams orchestrated a 10-play, 61-yard scoring drive that culminated with a 14-yard touchdown pass to tight end Colston Loveland.

“It’s a huge point of emphasis for us. We were not good two-minute/end-of-half,” Johnson said before Friday’s practice. “We weren’t very good in the second quarter in general. We didn’t score as many points as the other quarters. We gave up more points in that quarter as well.

“We talked about that as a team last night, and this will be our first chance today to work that situation at two minutes before halftime. And so a lot goes into it. I do think, as I’ve said it to you for a year and a half now, anytime you put emphasis on something, you normally see good things happen because of it.”

Per Bear Report, Williams was sacked once on the drive, but he bounced back with four connections to Loveland for 39 yards on the drive. The offense also took advantage of two offsides called on the defense.
