Caleb Williams breaks down TD to Colston Loveland in joint practice

· · 2 min read

The Chicago Bears participated in a joint practice against the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday, which proved to be a good challenge for both teams, ahead of their preseason game on Saturday.

While it was a mixed bag for Chicago’s offense, who started strong and ended rough, quarterback Caleb Williams and tight end Colston Loveland picked up right where they left off at Paycor Stadium last season, when Williams connected with Loveland for the game-winning touchdown in a 47-42 shootout win.

Williams is Iceman during games and training camp as proven by his ice-cold touchdown pass to Loveland in the Bears‘ joint practice against the Bengals, which left Cincinnati beat reporters impressed and provided more of the same for Chicago reporters.

After the joint practice, Williams broke down how the play transpired and how Loveland has become one of his most reliable targets.

“I rotated down into one-high, and just knowing it’s Colston, that’s my guy,” Williams said. “Going up the seam, the defender’s back was turned to me. He turned around right at the end, but the ball was already going over the top, and Colston ran a great route and made a catch.”

Loveland was Williams’ guy during the regular season as well. He led the Bears in receptions with 58, receiving yards last year with 713 and was tied for the most receiving touchdowns in Chicago with six. His first breakout game was against the Bengals last season when he had 118 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning 58-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

Going into this season, Williams has a lot of weapons to work with. In addition to Loveland, the Bears have wide receivers Rome Odunze and Luther Burden III.  They also drafted rookie tight end Sam Roush, who is expected to be more of a pass-catching tight end, and rookie receiver Zavion Thomas.

It is currently unknown if the starters will play against the Bengals in their preseason game this Saturday, but the game will nonetheless be a good opportunity for Chicago’s second- and third-string receivers to shine and show why they deserve to make the 53-man roster.
