Long before Caitlin Clark became the face of the WNBA and one of the most recognizable athletes in America, she was building lifelong relationships at the University of Iowa.

Clark’s record-breaking college career transformed the Hawkeyes into one of the biggest stories in sports. While fans remember the unforgettable logo threes, sold-out arenas and back-to-back national championship game appearances, many of the people behind the scenes who helped tell Clark’s story remain close to the Indiana Fever superstar today.

That was evident this week when Clark quickly responded to a major personal announcement from one of Iowa’s longtime athletic department staff members.

Big news from a familiar Iowa face

On Wednesday, Iowa athletics director of social media and digital strategy Brandee Saunders shared exciting news with family, friends and followers on Instagram. Saunders announced that she and her husband, Caleb, are expecting their first child together. The post featured ultrasound photos, baby shoes, matching “mom” and “dad” hats and a sign that read, “Baby Saunders December 2026.”

It didn’t take long for Clark to notice.

The Fever star jumped into the comments section with a simple but heartfelt message.

“Congrats!!!!” Clark wrote.

Saunders later acknowledged the comment with a like, adding another public reminder of the bond the two built during Clark’s historic run in Iowa City.

The Iowa connection remains strong

Few people played a bigger role in showcasing Clark’s rise than Saunders. As Iowa’s director of social media and digital strategy, Saunders helped lead the digital content efforts that brought Clark’s biggest moments to millions of fans across the country. From record-breaking performances to viral highlights, Iowa’s social media presence became one of the most influential brands in college athletics during Clark’s career.

The relationship extended beyond simply posting highlights. Throughout her four seasons with the Hawkeyes, Clark developed close connections with coaches, teammates and staff members throughout the athletic department. Even after leaving for the WNBA, those relationships have remained intact.

That’s one reason moments like this continue to hit home with Iowa fans.

Clark’s legacy at Iowa still grows

Clark’s impact on Iowa basketball remains unmatched. The former Hawkeyes star finished her collegiate career as the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer with 3,951 points while leading Iowa to consecutive national championship game appearances.

She left campus as one of the most decorated players in college basketball history and immediately carried that momentum into the professional ranks. After being selected No. 1 overall by the Indiana Fever in the 2024 WNBA Draft, Clark helped lead the franchise back to the playoffs and captured WNBA Rookie of the Year honors.

Today, she remains at the center of Indiana’s championship aspirations. But as her reaction to Saunders’ announcement showed, Clark still makes time to celebrate the people who were part of her journey before the spotlight became even brighter. Sometimes, a simple congratulatory message is enough to remind everyone where those roots began.
