Bulinews Player of the Season Awards: Bayer Leverkusen’s Player of the Season
In what would most likely be his last season at Bayer Leverkusen, Alejandro Grimaldo is picked as the club8217;s best player by Bulinews writers. The Spaniard was the outright winner, with seven votes out of the ten available.
Bayer Leverkusen’s start to the campaign was chaotic as Erik ten Hag was fired after two games. A respectable run in the Champions League and a sixth-placed Bundesliga finish weren’t enough to keep Kasper Hjulmand for next season as well.
Grimaldo and his compatriot Aleix Garcia were the only Leverkusen players to surpass 4,000 minutes of action in all competitions this season. He was the assist leader, while his 14 goals (eight in Bundesliga) were only bettered by Patrick Schick.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCE:
The attacking wingback scored a brace on three different occasions, including his first-half goals in the 6-3 win over Wolfsburg on matchday 28. The home draw with champions Bayern was the only game he missed in the second half of the season.
His first brace of the season was a special one as he scored two direct free-kicks in Hjulmand’s first game in charge. In total, the 30-year-old found the net five times from similar situations, which is one better than the last two seasons combined.
HONOURABLE MENTIONS:
Schick was only beaten for the throne by Florian Wirtz in last season’s voting, but he hasn’t won a single vote this time around despite a strong end to the campaign. Meanwhile, the remaining votes went to Ibrahim Maza (2) and Jarell Quansah (1), who will be among the players representing Leverkusen in the World Cup, after impressive displays in their first Bundesliga experience.
