The Boston Bruins attempted to earn their third win of the season against the Senators. Instead, the team lost two straight after Ottawa almost shut them out on Monday.

Boston could not take advantage of power play opportunities. The Senators scored goals when the Bruins had the edge.

Despite Ottawa losing goalie Linus Ullmark in the third period, Samuel Ersson held things down against a relatively quiet Bruins team.

3 Takeaways From Bruins-Senators Game

Bruins couldn’t take advantage of power play

Boston was outshot 24-19 and failed to score on four power plays. In fact, the Senators scored more goals off the Bruins’ own power plays.

In the first, Tim Stutzle scored when Boston had the power play. Minutes after, Boston had another power play. It ended without the Bruins scoring. Stutzle struck again right after.

The Senators kept Boston silent during each power play. Early in the season, the Bruins must look back on this game and tighten things up.

James Hagens shows passion in loss

Looking to prove he belongs, James Hagens brought it to the Senators when no other Boston player could.

Hagens kept the game from being a shutout with a goal in the third period. It came after an earlier attempt seconds before he scored. That was his second goal of the season.

Later, Hagens was involved in a scuffle towards the end of the game. While it didn’t matter, it showed the 19-year-old won’t let any team put the Bruins down, despite the score.

Veterans need to step up

While the youngsters tried to make an impact, so did the Bruins’ core.

Morgan Geekie, David Pastrnak, and Elias Lindholm each had a +/- mark of -2. While they attempted to get things going, they couldn’t score goals.

As JJ Peterka continues to showcase speed and lead the team, the veterans will need to step up to take the slack off him, James Hagens, and others.
