Deshaun Watson endured another brutal afternoon behind the Cleveland Browns‘ offensive line. However, the quarterback refused to point fingers after an eight-sack beating against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Following Cleveland’s 27-6 defeat at Acrisure Stadium on Sunday, Watson accepted responsibility for the constant pressure. He acknowledged that his tendency to hold onto the football and chase big plays contributed to the offensive collapse. The loss dropped the Browns to 5-3. It knocked them out of first place in the AFC North.

TJ Watt and Pittsburgh’s pass rush repeatedly overwhelmed Cleveland’s protection. That brought Watson’s season sack total to a league-worst 35. However, the veteran signal-caller insisted that he would not make his offensive linemen scapegoats for the struggles.

“Put it on me, I’m never gonna tend to try to put it on the guys up front,” Watson said. He added that finding checkdowns and throwing the ball away more often could have prevented some of the negative plays.

Watson also admitted that his instinct to extend plays sometimes worked against the offense. Rather than accepting an incomplete pass, he occasionally held the ball too long. That allowed defenders to push Cleveland further behind the chains.

Watson’s 2026 season has been a mixed bag. Through eight weeks, he has guided Cleveland to a 5-3 record with five dramatic late-game scoring drives. Those include a strong 308-yard performance in Week 7. Yet his league-leading sack total remains a glaring concern, highlighted by Sunday’s eight-sack disaster.

Browns’ Deshaun Watson refuses to blame

With the trade deadline approaching, Cleveland must find ways to improve its protection. Watson has taken responsibility. That said, the Browns need better execution up front if their postseason ambitions are to survive.
