The Milwaukee Brewers entered the bottom of the 12th inning of Game 4 of the World Series in need of just three more outs to crown themselves champion after Cooper Pratt gave them the lead with a solo shot in the previous half-inning. The Brewers no longer had their best relievers available, with Aaron Ashby and Trevor Megill having appeared earlier in the game, so it was up to Shane Drohan to seal the deal and complete the sweep over the Tampa Bay Rays.
And in the first at-bat of the inning, it looked like Drohan had done his job, as he forced a groundball off of Junior Caminero. Alas, third baseman Joey Ortiz made an errant throw to first base, and Jake Bauers was unable to pick up the one-hop throw. The floodgates would then open up for the Rays, as they would record four consecutive hits against Drohan to turn the game on its head and pick up a 4-3 win in walk-off fashion.

This was a monumental error for Ortiz to make, and at the worst possible time, no less. And while the Brewers aren’t playing the blame game, Ortiz is making no excuses for that major blunder.
“Yeah, [they’ve been giving me] encouraging words. But, I mean, it is what it is. I got to make that play. There’s no excuse about it, no matter what anyone says,” Ortiz told reporters after the game, via FOX Sports MLB on X.

Ortiz is typically surehanded on the field; he did have 10 errors in the regular season, splitting most of his time between third base and shortstop, but the Brewers trust him to make that routine play.
Nonetheless, this is just one loss for Milwaukee. They are still in command of the World Series, being up 3-1, and with ace Jacob Misiorowski on the mound for Game 5, the odds are still heavily in their favor.
