Brewers' Christian Yelich Makes Clear Who He Thinks Should Win NL MVP Award This Year

Shohei Ohtani was leading the National League MVP Race for most of the season, but a couple of weeks ago, Pete Crow-Armstrong passed him as the favorite, and he has not looked back since.

Crow-Armstrong is on the verge of a 40-40 season, needing just five more stolen bases. With Ohtani suddenly struggling at the plate and unlikely to pitch again, it looks like he will run away with the award. However, some still think Ohtani’s 14 starts and overall body of work are good enough to win the award for the third straight season in the National League.

What Crow-Armstrong has done this year should result in an MVP Award, but the fact that he is up against the only two-way player in the sport and one of the best of all time seems to make this a slight race. However, Cubs rival and 2018 National League MVP Christian Yelich thinks Crow-Armstrong should be the one to walk away with the award.

“He’s having an unbelievable year,” Yelich said after the Milwaukee Brewers’ 4-3 win over the Cubs on Monday. “He’s made some real changes and has continued to grow as a player. Definitely, offensively, he’s taken that next step. He’s been unbelievable for them. Everybody knows what he can do defensively and how good he is out there. In my mind, he’s the MVP for sure. He’s unbelievable with what he can do out there, and he’s a dangerous AB every time he comes to the plate.”

Yelich posted a 36-homer, 22-steal season in 2018, leading the National League in OPS and bWAR. He would likely have won MVP again in 2019 if not for a fractured kneecap that forced him out of the final month of the season. He knows what it takes to win MVP and is one of the best players in the game.

Even though they play on rival teams, Yelich knows that the season Crow-Armstrong is having this year is special. Yelich himself is having a down year, but when he’s going right, he is still one of the better hitters in baseball. He and the Brewers will have their hands full if they see the Cubs in October again.
