Brazil hit historic low in World Cup loss to Norway in Round of 16

The World Cup has already produced plenty of unforgettable moments, and Norway added another in the Round of 16.

Brazil entered the match as the favorite, but Norway once again proved it has Brazil’s number while helping the five-time champions make unwanted history.

Norway eliminated Brazil in a stunning upset, and Brazil finished with just 34% possession. According to ESPN FC tracking, that marks Brazil’s lowest possession ever recorded in a FIFA World Cup match.

Norway’s victory sent shockwaves through the tournament bracket, with social media buzzing about the performance. Norway controlled the match from start to finish, limiting Brazil’s opportunities and outperforming them in nearly every key statistical category.

Norway recorded a higher percentage of shots on target, attempted more than twice as many passes, and finished with a pass completion rate three percentage points higher than Brazil’s. Most importantly, Norway converted its dominance into a victory.

Brazil’s only statistical edge came in total shots, finishing with 12 compared to Norway’s nine. However, only four of Brazil’s attempts were on target.

Brazil entered the match as a slight betting favorite, and the majority of the betting public backed them despite Brazil’s historical struggles against Norway. Norway made sure that trend continued.

Erling Haaland scored both of Norway’s goals, providing the decisive difference. He has now scored in each of his last 14 appearances for Norway. Andreas Schjelderup assisted both goals.

Norway will now wait to learn its quarterfinal opponent. The team is currently scheduled to play its next World Cup match on Saturday, July 11.

That opponent will be determined Sunday night when England faces Mexico in a match scheduled to kick off at 9 p.m. ET. The winner will advance to face Norway in the quarterfinals.
